The Dallas Mavericks are back in the NBA Finals! Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving dominated on both ends of the court, leading the Mavs to a convincing 124-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals.
Doncic set the tone early, scoring 20 points in the first quarter alone. He finished the game with a playoff career-high of 36 points and 10 rebounds. Irving wasn’t far behind, putting up 36 points himself as the duo dismantled the Wolves’ defense.
The Mavs built a sizeable lead early and never looked back. They frustrated the Wolves offensively, shutting down Anthony Edwards (28 points) and Karl-Anthony Towns (28 points, 12 rebounds) who couldn’t replicate their success from previous rounds.
This win marks the franchise’s first appearance in the Finals since their championship run in 2011, when Jason Kidd was still a player. The Mavs will now get a full week of rest before facing the Boston Celtics in the Finals, which begin on June 6th.
The Celtics, who swept the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals, will have had significantly more rest. However, the Mavs are riding high on the momentum of their dominant performance and the potent one-two puncҺ of Doncic and Irving.
Can the Mavs overcome the rest disadvantage and bring home another championship? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: this series promises to be exciting!
