DJ Khaled personally presented the ‘I Am Hip-Hop’ award to Lil Wayne at the BET Hip-Hop Awards

Lil Wayne took the stage alongside his mother, Jacida Carter, and daughter, Reginae Carter. Bun B from UGK helped give him a warm welcome, and he and DJ Khaled presented Wayne with the trophy. Lil Wayne then delivered an emotional acceptance speech.

In his speech, Wayne expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him during the challenging years he faced as a rap icon. He thanked his friends, family, and fans, and paid special tribute to a man he referred to as Uncle Bob, who had saved him from suicidе years earlier.

“I dedicate this honor to those who stood by me. These are the people who believed in me when it seemed like I hadn’t released an album in four or six years. You supported me and showed me respect. You were there for every performance and appreciated every record and feature. My family kept inspiring me and wouldn’t let me forget who I am. They made sure I never felt less than myself. Please give this award to my family.”

Wayne then shared the story of Uncle Bob, the man who saved his life when he was twelve and attempted suicidе.

“When I say ‘refuse,’ I’m talking about a man in New Orleans named Uncle Bob,” Wayne began. “One day, he entered an apartment with his gn drawn and found no one inside. He noticed legs on the floor—my legs—and bloоd everywhere. The police rushed in, but he wouldn’t comply. I learned later that EMS had been called twice but had said there was nothing they could do. Uncle Bob wouldn’t accept that.”

Weezy continued, recalling Uncle Bob saying, “Someone drive this car; forget the ambulance.” He took Wayne to the hospital himself, kicking down doors and insisting, “Do whatever you have to do to save this kid.” Uncle Bob was a homicidе detective that day, focused on saving Wayne’s life rather than following protocol. He ensured Wayne received the care he needed and survived.
