Manchester City’s Champions League campaign took another disappointing turn as they blew a commanding 3-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium, settling for a 3-3 draw against Feyenoord. After a string of five consecutive losses in all competitions, this match was supposed to be a turning point for Pep Guardiola’s side, but it ended in frustration.
The evening started brightly for City. Erling Haaland broke the deadlock just before halftime, converting a penalty after being brought down in the box. Despite Feyenoord goalkeeper Wellenreuther’s attempts to delay the spot-kick with mind games, Haaland kept his cool, smashing the ball into the net.
City built on their lead quickly in the second half. Ilkay Gundogan made it 2-0 in the 49th minute with a powerful first-time volley, deflected past the helpless keeper after a poor clearance from a Phil Foden corner.
Moments later, Matheus Nunes stormed down the wing, delivering a perfect cross for Haaland to slide in his second and City’s third.
But what seemed like a comfortable evening for the hosts turned into a nightmare. Feyenoord capitalized on defensive lapses, starting with Hadj Moussa, who punished a clumsy Josko Gvardiol clearance to round Ederson and pull one back. Santiago Gimenez then tapped in from close range after a misplaced clearance allowed Jordan Lotomba’s cross to find its way past the City defense. The equalizer came in the 84th minute, with Igor Paixao outpacing the City defense to set up Dávid Hancko’s header.
Despite a late push for a winner, City couldn’t recover from their collapse. This result not only extends their winless streak but raises questions about their defensive fragility and mental fortitude in key moments.
For a team of City’s caliber, throwing away a three-goal lead at home is unacceptable. The pressure on Guardiola and his squad is mounting as they struggle to regain their rhythm in a season that has been anything but smooth. With tougher fixtures on the horizon, City must regroup quickly to salvage their Champions League hopes.
