Cesar Huerta insists he was close to Liverpool in the summer, but the Mexican striker now looks set to move to Europe in January.
Cesar Huerta has claimed he was close to a dream move to Liverpool in the summer, and it looks like he could soon be on his way to Europe.
The Mexican striker was a surprise arrival for the Red Devils earlier this year, with reports in Central America claiming in August that the Anfield club were keeping tabs on Pumas star UNAM.
In fact, Huerta himself appeared to confirm that there was more than just Liverpool interest, claiming he was ready to move to Merseyside before the deal collapsed. Reports at the time suggested the Reds wanted to loan the striker to Sunderland, but Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris refused to give the green light.
“There was a problem,” Huerta told AS in September. “I had my suitcase ready, but it fell out because of a problem.
“I knew that sooner or later, if I kept doing the right thing, I would have a chance. I know it’s a one-off and I’m focused on Pumas.”
While Huerta may not be able to achieve that goal at the moment, it seems likely that he will soon move to Europe.
According to Mexican newspaper Super Deportivo, Pumas have two offers from Spanish side Osasuna and Belgian side Anderlecht. Huerta is said to prefer the latter and is currently in advanced talks with the Brussels club.
Pumas are keen to recoup their transfer fee for the 24-year-old, and the move looks set to be completed as early as January.
If Huerta does complete his move to Europe, it will be interesting to see whether Liverpool keep an eye on him with the intention of revisiting their interest in the future.
Clarifying further as to why a move to Anfield didn’t happen for Huerta, Pumas president Luis Raul Gonzalez Perez said: “It has nothing to do with the club or his intentions.
“On the contrary, they recognized Huerta’s quality. The external circumstances of the teams themselves made it impossible. I repeat, not because of Huerta’s quality, but because of the external circumstances.”
