Trent Alexander-Arnold is seeking a long-term contract and a commitment to make him Liverpool’s captain if he decides to remain at Anfield.

His current contract expires at the end of the season, allowing him to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad. Liverpool turned down a £20 million offer from Real Madrid for his immediate transfer on New Year’s Eve.

Real Madrid still seems to be the leading contender to sign the Englishman for next season, but he is giving Liverpool the opportunity to secure his long-term future.

Having been with the Reds since childhood and progressing through their academy, Alexander-Arnold remains hopeful about extending his time on Merseyside, contingent on two key demands being met.

According to talkSPORT, he has informed Liverpool officials that they must provide him with at least a three-year contract for him to stay, along with a pledge to make him captain in the future.

The current captain, Virgil van Dijk, is also set to be out of contract this summer, and it remains unclear how Alexander-Arnold’s second demand might influence the Dutchman’s own contract negotiations.

At 33 years old, Van Dijk’s situation could align with Alexander-Arnold’s aspirations, even if the skipper remains with the club. The right-back’s future is seen as “open,” with indications that Van Dijk is likely to stay.

Madrid is expected to offer him a lucrative contract, potentially doubling his wages to around £400,000 per week. Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Los Blancos, has been cautious about discussing a potential move publicly.

“January signings? It’s a bit more complicated to talk about this. We’ll see, we’ll see. Talking about this is not easy at the moment,” he stated in a press conference before the team’s La Liga match against Valencia.

“I previously said we wouldn’t sign anyone in January. Look, I can’t discuss it now. This is not the right time or place. We will see what happens, but I have a great squad. We are dealing with injuries and challenges, but we can overcome them.”

Alexander-Arnold has also expressed a desire to keep his discussions with Liverpool private, focusing instead on helping the team achieve success this season.

“I have been at the club for 20 years, signed four or five contract extensions, and none of those were public affairs—this one won’t be either,” he told Sky Sports in December.

“I believe we can win multiple trophies. That’s the level we are at, and we’ve proven we can beat the best teams in the world.”
